CAR-T Cell Therapy in China

Overview

CAR-T is a highly individualized cancer immunotherapy. A patient's T cells are collected, modified and expanded in a controlled manufacturing process, then infused back into the patient to recognize a specific tumor target.

Approved products in China are mainly used for selected relapsed or refractory leukemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma. Product, target, age, prior treatment and physical condition all affect eligibility.

Important risks and limits

• CAR-T is not suitable for every cancer or every patient.
• Serious adverse events can include cytokine release syndrome, neurologic toxicity, infection and prolonged low blood counts.
• Treatment must take place at a qualified institution with intensive-care capability.
