Proton & Heavy-Ion Therapy in China

Overview

Proton and carbon-ion therapy use particle beams with a distinctive dose distribution, allowing radiation to be concentrated in the tumor while reducing dose to some surrounding tissues.

It may be considered for selected tumors near critical structures and for some pediatric, head-and-neck, skull-base, prostate and other solid tumors after specialist review.

Potential advantages

• More concentrated radiation dose in selected cases
• Reduced exposure to some nearby normal tissues
• May reduce specific long-term radiation effects
• Useful for some anatomically complex tumors

• Pathology, stage and surgical history
• Recent contrast CT, MRI or PET-CT images and reports
• Previous radiotherapy plans, sites and doses
• Recent blood tests, medicines and relevant conditions
• Current symptoms and performance status

Important limits

• Particle therapy is not automatically better than conventional radiotherapy for every tumor.
• Suitability depends on tumor type, site, stage, prior radiation and the full treatment plan.
• Only the treating center can confirm eligibility, benefits, risks and final cost.
