Cell-Therapy Research for Knee Osteoarthritis

Overview

Mesenchymal stromal cells are being studied for possible anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in knee osteoarthritis.

AlloJoin (lotazadromcel), an allogeneic adipose-derived cell product, completed enrollment of more than 500 participants in a pivotal China phase III study in May 2026. It remains investigational and is not an approved routine treatment.

What current evidence can and cannot show

• Some studies report improvements in pain and function
• Evidence does not show complete cartilage regrowth for every patient
• Age, OA grade, alignment, meniscus, ligaments and prior care matter
• A research product must not be presented as an approved cure
